AN EXPLANATION OF SABLE BRED TO BUFF COLOR INHERITANCE
There seems to be some confusion about whether
sable is recessive to buff. This is an attempt to clarify this.
There may be the appearance of repetition but each gene combination needs
to be examined by itself. It is assumed that the reader has a basic understanding
of MENDEL'S LAW and has a working knowledge of coat color inheritance as
published by C, Little ( who's work has proven to be 100% accurate (except
for his assumptions about roan grading in to ticking ) at least as far
cocker spaniels are concerned . " what else counts" ) The buff gene
and the sable gene are inherited independently of each other but because
of the similarities in appearance are easily confused.
|
The buff gene is located at the 'e' locus and comes in two (2) forms'E'
(non buff) and 'e' (buff). 'E' (non buff) is dominant to 'e '(buff) recessive.
The sable gene is one of a trio ( 3 ) and is located at the 'A' locus. They
are 'A' (solid) (non sable) (non tan points) dominant,'ay' (sable) recessive
to 'A' (solid) but dominant to 'at' (tan pointed), and 'at' (tan pointed)
recessive to 'A' (solid) and 'ay' (sable). The sable gene is in reality
another of the dilution effects similar to buff so often seen on cockers.
|
The sable gene is commonly considered
dominant to tan points but in its hetrozygous expression is in reality
what would would be called co-dominant . The reason for this is that
the typical sable ( A hetrozygote of 'at-ay' ) yellow
with dark overlay )
is actually half way between tan points (
'at-at') and true sable(
'ay-ay'(clear yellow looks the same as buff ).
For simplicity it is assumed that these hypothetical cockers
have at least one gene for black "B"
1. If you breed a buff 'ee' carrying 'AA' (solid) to a sable
assuming it is the typical sable, 'ay at' (a yellow dog with black overlay)
carrying 'EE' (non buff) you could expect to get all black
